Our union with Christ through baptism is thereby strengthened in the Eucharist. It is interesting to speculate that Joseph might have found work as that city was being built. This was a moment of new creation. They claimed to have seen the risen Lord; Thomas declared that he would not believe until he not only saw the Lord but touched his wounds. We all have something to receive from someone else. He breathed new life into them; he recreated them in his love. Breathing the Holy Spirit upon them, he sent them out to reveal Gods merciful love to all, those whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven. The questioning of our reason that is an inevitable part of seeing dimly is not an enemy of faith. As the shepherd calls his sheep one by one, so the Lord calls his followers one by one; he calls us by name; he calls us in a way that respects our individuality and uniqueness, in accordance with our own particular nature. All we can do is to surrender to the breath of the Spirit within us and around us, to allow the Spirit to direct us and to lead us. In todays first reading, an Ethiopian court official comes to faith in Jesus. It was while he was at table with the two disciples and broke bread with them that they finally came to recognize fully the stranger who had shared their journey. He is not saying, in other words, I am a gate, but, rather, I am the gate. Jesus immediately challenges him to take a much bigger step towards him; he calls on Nicodemus to allow himself to be born from above, to be born of water and the Spirit. In the gospel reading this morning Jesus speaks of the shepherd who calls his own sheep one by one and leads them out. When Jesus declares in todays gospel reading, my yoke is easy and my burden light, he is saying that his teaching, his understanding of Gods will, is not something burdensome. In the opening verses of his gospel, John the evangelist declared, the Word became flesh and lived among us. The way the Lord related to those two disciples is how he relates to all of us. Today is vocation Sunday. There will always be an element of unease about our faith, some restlessness that moves us to keep seeking the Lord. This new life has an extraordinary impact on their lives from the moment the child is born. We recognize him in the Eucharist as the bread of life, in the language of todays gospel reading. They understood, as Jesus did, that prayerful attentiveness to Gods word would allow their lives to be shaped by Gods purpose and would best serve the life of the believing community. The Lord needs what we have, even if it seems slight to us, and he can accomplish far more than we could imagine with the little we have if we make ourselves available to him. One of the disciples in the gospel reading is mentioned by name, Thomas. God gives him the Spirit without reserve. That is our fundamental calling, to come to the Lord in faith; all else follows from that. It is a time when, in the power of that Spirit, we rise above our fear and step out with a new courage to witness to the Lord by what we say and do. Today we might call such a person a facilitator or an enabler of others. so that a man may eat it and not die. The Eucharist was very much at the heart of the life of Sister Gonzaga. He can offer himself to them as the Bread of Life who responds to the deepest yearnings of their heart, for truth, for a love that endures, for a life over which death has no power. The Lord is very attentive to us, but we need to attend to him as well. These basic human physical needs had to be met first. There is a need for different groups of people to take responsibility for different ministries. On our pilgrimage of life, the Spirit is always at our back. He journeys with us as a shepherd and a guardian to bring life out of our various experiences of death, to heal our brokenness, and, in the words of todays Responsorial Psalm, to revive my drooping spirit. The Lord can work powerfully through the members of the church, even when they seem few in number and increasingly frail, especially in the Western world. In walking with the two disciples, the Lord transformed them from being downcast to having their hearts burn within them; he rekindled their hope. The story they told the stranger was without any hope in it. The Lords invitation, Come to me, all who labour and are overburdened, is addressed to all of us. The Lords unique call to each one of us is with a view to our being fully alive. In todays gospel reading, Jesus speaks of two kinds of food, food that cannot last and food that endures to eternal life. His first approach to Jesus is tentative, coming to Jesus under cover of darkness. - 8:00 pm Exposition followed by Conference, Night Prayer, and Confessions. Her mission in person to the Pope was a surprising success. In todays gospel reading, Jesus speaks of the wind as having a mysterious quality. It is notable that the text says that Philip heard him reading Isaiah the prophet. We are very security conscious in these times. Jesus is not calculating about his giving of the Spirit. It is the life of God and his Son and it is received here and now by those who believe in Gods Son. Mark was the first person to write an account of the pubic ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus. The Lord is there before us even if we have not invited him in, even if we have locked ourselves away from him. Then the Lord Jesus, after he spoke to them, was taken up into heaven and took his seat at the right hand of God.
